How has it already been 4 months since we started this sell-the-house-live-in-an-RV adventure?? We have learned so many lessons that it feels like we are seasoned pros in some ways and in others, we feel like we are still getting our “RV” legs.
Let me just say that we absolutely love our camper and are so happy with our choice! We’ve heard in so many RV forums that it’s typical to not like your first rig…that it almost always takes until at least your second one to really know what you want. Well…I guess we got lucky! We definitely did a ton of research and looked at what seems like hundreds of models but we ended up with just what we needed.
Flexibility
We ordered it at the end of June and it was supposed to come in by the end of September. We were scheduled to close on our house in early October and planning to hit the road for a month-long job in West Virginia. As luck (and COVID-related delays) would have it, our trailer wasn’t ready by the time we were ready to leave.
Enter, John’s cousin Kathy and her husband Bob. We had plans to meet them in West Virginia for about a week so they could share all their wisdom from owning a similar-style camper for several years. We were going to hang out at the state park and get a slow introduction to all the things we needed to know. Well given that our new home on wheels wasn’t going to be ready, we grabbed an Airbnb instead.
We weren’t too far from the state park so we were able to still get our RV lessons from Kathy and Bob, thankfully! They also offered to leave their camper with us for the 3 weeks we were planning to be there and they would drive our utility trailer back to Illinois with them. The plan was to swap trailers on our way back to Minnesota. Basically, they saved us! And we were so grateful!
They gave us the rundown on their camper and even walked us through emptying the dreaded black tank. This might be a good time to note that John and I were going to implement a “no pooping in the camper” policy. Neither of us was too keen on emptying the black tank. Besides, we’ve traveled for years without ever pooping in our car, surely we could plan to stop at rest areas, gas stations and use the campground bathrooms. Shouldn’t be a problem at all! Once we actually got our camper, that rule lasted exactly 3 days. Oops.
The three weeks we spent there gave us a chance to breathe after the whirlwind of selling the house and saying all of our goodbyes. The leaves were just changing and we got to spend a ton of time hiking and just enjoying being outside. It was a glimpse of the slower pace that we would now be living and it felt good.
Getting to “practice” in Kathy and Bob’s camper served us well. When we finally got to pick up our camper in the middle of November, we knew all the questions to ask during the walkthrough and all the little things to look for. We knew what accessories we needed to buy and which ones we could do without.
Our New Little Home
We felt happy and confident. We started out in our camper just after Thanksgiving and headed to South Carolina. The first night we stayed in my hometown in Wisconsin, so we could show the rig off to family. Because we were parked on the street across from my dad’s house, we couldn’t pop out the slide which gives us access to our bedroom, so we slept in the bunk beds. Wheeee! Then we blew a fuse and basically didn’t have heat that first night. It was cold. So, so cold. Yay for heated seats in our truck!

We thought by heading south, the weather would be warmer. Silly us. We stopped for a night in Kentucky, didn’t have electrical hookups and it snowed. It was cold. Then we made it to Durham, NC and it was cold again. Unusually cold according to the locals. That night, in our attempt to stay warm, we apparently ran our battery all the way down which we learned sets off the carbon monoxide detector, which jolts you out of bed (at 3:00 am) forcing you to evacuate quickly. With the dog in tow, we drove to a Walmart parking lot where we searched the internet trying to figure out why the carbon monoxide detector went off. We figured it out about 5:00 am and headed back to the now freezing camper.
We were relieved to make it to our destination at the Magnolia Plantation in Charleston, SC where we would be staying in a cottage…with heat!

We discovered quickly that it wouldn’t be until we headed way farther south and west to Arizona in early January that we would finally get to some truly warm temperatures.
We spent about six weeks altogether in Arizona. We stayed at a beautiful horse ranch in Sonoita for a few weeks, an RV park in Bisbee where we got to see thousands of sandhill cranes during their migration, and then ended with an amazing two weeks in Sedona. We hiked just about every day and the best part was a visit from some good friends plus our son. Sedona is stunning and getting to spend time with friends and family made it even better.

We’re off to the next destination–Louisiana. I’m sure it will be warm there. Right? Right.
