Our Biggest Challenge So Far…

The Big Question

Everyone always asks us what the biggest challenge has been since we started our full-time RV journey 10 months ago.  Is it living in such a tiny space? Is it not having all of our stuff with us? Is it hard to pull the camper or park it? While all of those things can and have presented some challenges, those have been minor.

Our biggest challenge by far has been consistent, reliable internet service!  Now, we are all about being unplugged and not being tied to our phones or computers but the reality is we are not retired.  We still have jobs that require that we connect through the use of the internet.  And let me tell you, it can be super hard to find.

Sometimes a campground will say they have great WIFI when in reality you are sharing less than optimal service with all the other people in the campground.  Sometimes we are in an area that is just too remote and not only isn’t there WiFi, but the cell service is also almost non-existent so we can’t use our hotspots. We recently spent some time in Sol Duc Springs Campground. We knew it was a bit remote but we didn’t realize that we would have to drive 20-25 minutes before we even got a tiny signal on our phones and an hour or more to access usable internet in Port Angeles. So driving that far twice a day and sitting in a coffee shop proved to be more exhausting than it sounds like it should be. We were grateful it provided beautiful scenery though.

We have found fabulous coffee shops and two of our favorites have been the P2 Coffee House in Stanwood, WA, and Tasty Kate’s in Port Orford, OR. They have the best service and coffee but sitting there day after day, drinking cup after cup of coffee can make even the most enthusiastic coffee drinkers question their loyalty to this ritual. Not to mention just feeling like a mooch sitting there all day, using their internet trying to work as fast as we could.  We make frequent purchases, tip well, and get to know the baristas and owners.

Options

We have researched so many options and, unfortunately, there really aren’t any foolproof solutions for full-time RVers.

We have a WiFi extender for when there is WiFi available…again, that’s mediocre at best. We have added WiFi in our truck because that uses an AT&T hotspot connection and our cell phones are Verizon.  We thought that way we were increasing our chances by using two different carriers and it has helped on occasion.  Generally, we have found that if cell service is limited, it’s limited for all the carriers. Many RV forums have suggested getting an additional hotspot but data isn’t our problem, it’s actually the connection itself.

We have looked into satellite services.  The only one that’s available to full-time Rvers who don’t have service attached to a permanent home costs almost $7,000 to install and then it can be up to $150 per month or more.  Not really cost-effective.

We are signed up for the new Starlink Satellite service that is being beta tested, however, that is still limited right now to a permanent address, however, we are on their waiting list. We think that will eventually be our best option.

Find The Joy

So what do we do? We make the best of it! We consume loads of coffee, pastries, and other treats. We shout them out on Social Media as an additional way to say thanks for providing a connection for us. Our normal flow has been to do some work in our camper, take a break to go hiking for a bit, or just sit outside the camper and read and then we can do a little more work, make some food, do a little more work and then call it a day. 

We have met some of the nicest coffee shop owners, baristas, and servers. We get extended time not being glued to our phones and that is not a bad thing. We try not to dwell on the amount of time that we drive around like frantic, internet-starved people constantly checking how many bars we have on our phones. We also try hard not to just stop dead in the middle of a street or highway when we have full service! Although it is tempting at times! 

Overall, it’s not the end of the world. It’s one of the more surprising challenges we’ve had given the times we live in but it is still quite small in the big picture. So we are grateful for when it works and enjoy it when it doesn’t work so well. Seems like a good balance.
