One of the biggest questions we got when we told people we were selling our house and planning to live in a 30 ft RV was “What are you going to do with all of your stuff?”
To be honest, we wondered the same thing! We had lived in our house for almost 20 years and to say we had accumulated a lot of stuff might be the understatement of the year. Not only did we have regular house stuff and memories but we also had all of our Christmas Tree farm tools/ gear and all of John’s photo business equipment plus exhibits plus a pallet full of John’s books that we housed for shipping when orders are placed.
It took several run-throughs of each room to figure out what was going to come with us in the RV, move into storage, sell, or giveaway.
To make the whole process that much more interesting, we needed to make these decisions while remodeling our bathroom and kitchen, refinishing our hardwood floors, painting all the walls, and sticking with our priority of spending time saying goodbye to friends. Luckily, many of those friends came to our rescue and helped us go through all of our stuff. Whew…we are forever grateful to them!
There are lots of areas that we had to focus on but I’m going to start with the kitchen. This was probably the biggest hurdle for me. If you know me then you know that one of my absolute favorite things to do is spend time in my kitchen cooking, baking, pouring over new recipes, and looking for ways to use the many awesome kitchen gadgets and appliances I’ve collected over the years. I knew that there were many things that I could live without but there were also many things that I just love and really preferred to have at my disposal.
We have camped for years and have even done our share of backpacking so I can definitely get by with less but this would be different. We would be living full-time with less. After much soul-searching and lots of pep talks to myself, his is what made the cut.

- One set of shredders/graters/slicers (4 styles came in one set)
- Rubbermaid Brilliant storage containers (2 large, 4 small, 4 tiny)
- Aeropress Espresso maker (nice and compact)
- Twix-it chip clips
- My two favorite Wusthof Trident Santoku knives
- Stainless steel straws
- Wusthof- Kitchen Shears

I also pared down my spices to 15-20 of my most used favorites. I realize that that doesn’t sound like I paired down at all but TRUST ME…I did! I’m only using avocado oil so that I don’t need to store 3 different types of oil. Plus, it’s a healthy fat and doesn’t have a strong flavor, so it’s the perfect all-purpose oil.
We have 6 dishtowels, 2 washcloths (which are basically for backup because I mostly use Skoy Eco-Friendly cloths because they are biodegradable), and a couple of scrubbies. And that’s basically it!
The thing I probably miss the most is counter space! If only I could have figured out a way to bring extra counter space with us! I’ve gotten pretty adept at making a tiny square of counter space work for food prep so I’m feeling pretty proud.
We find that we are cooking almost all of our meals these days (partly because it’s hard to pull into restaurant parking lots with a 30-foot trailer)! I would say that we are pretty happy with the kitchen appliances and gadgets that we brought with us.
I almost forgot! I LOVE cookbooks. I love buying them, reading them, collecting them and using them. I ended up only bringing 4 of them with me plus a tiny pouch full of printed recipes that were some of my favorites. I felt so proud! I chose the cookbooks that focused on using one pot for most meals so that I wouldn’t miss all the various sized pots that I had at home. (I need to say it out loud here that I miss my Le Creuset pots. I used those all the time at home. They were just too heavy and frankly too precious to risk damaging them on the road so I put them in storage. And I dream about them every day.
It turns out that living with less stuff in the kitchen is not so bad after all. It’s actually quite nice and I highly recommend it.
